Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling, especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit.

The system developed from a modified version of pre-World War II Judo including some techniques from Japanese Jujutsu (most especially that of the ryu known as Fusen Ryu), which came via those techniques being incorporated into Kodokan Judo, and with a focus on ne-waza (ground technique).

It developed in relative isolation in Brazil, and has now become one of the fastest growing Martial arts in the World.

BJJ promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained and adapted for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as 'rolling') and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

Benefits of Training - There are many advantages in training BJJ in addition to the Self-defense and sport

applications. These include; - Healthy Lifestyle- Self-confidence- Friendship and camaraderie - Flexibility / Speed / Endurance- Motivation and Self-discipline - General overall Fitness

- Learn Submission techniques for sport or the real World

- Build Core strength

Although there are some devastating submissions in BJJ training is practiced with respect for yourself and your team members to ensure a safe and friendly training environment. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a very stimulating and challenging sport mentally as well physically. You can continually learn and improve your techniques and skills.

Who can join:
You are never too old to start. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a “Gentle Art”

Our kids class, caters to children as young as 6 in a safe and friendly environment. The emphasis with the children's class is that the games and training are specific to the sport. They learn to fall , roll, and generally exercise their bodies. Lack of Fitness and Obesity in Children is endemic in all countries and can lead to many health related issues later in life.

One of the unique aspects of this sport is that anyone with any body shape can take up BJJ.  You will have the opportunity to learn techniques that can be applicable to your size and shape.

Setting Goals /Training and Competitions
Our goal is to see our students enjoy the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and have the opportunity to fulfill their potential. This is why in addition to the training we host competitions for the students and the sport in general. We hope that this exposure will introduce Davawenyos/Filipinos to this very dynamic sport and give the players a chance to compete with teams from here and abroad.

Competitions: Pan Asian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu International, Pan Asian International Grappling Challenge (May) Philippine National Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competition, Philippine National Grappling Championships, ( March)

Philippine Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu  International Open , Philippine International Grappling Open (December)

All our members are welcome to join with the rest the BJJ community in the competitions.

Brazilian Jui-Jitsu is not for everyone, you need to have the mental strength to accept losses and continue training, this can be difficult for the ego of many people. The training can be quite tiring for many until your fitness level increases. All said though, BJJ challenges both the mind and the body and is a very enjoyable for all students who have the fortitude to continue.

Grading Syllabus
Syllabus : This system of assessment for all students as they progress through the grades is unique to Kamphuis - Fabricio students. Very few Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools around the World have a syllabus to asses the knowledge base of their students.

To ensure each student has a sound structure and fundamental knowledge all students must undertake to study and learn the grading syllabus before they can move to the next grade. Gradings are held two to three times per year. During this time students who have been notified that they will be grading and spend a few dedicated weeks to prepare and review all aspects of the syllabus which is relevant to them.

The syllabus was initially devised by Will - Machado Australia and was further modified and developed by Stephen Kamphuis and Fabricio - Martins (Head Instructor Equipe Fabricio) taking into account new techniques and training methods from Brazil as the sport evolves.

A separate Kids syllabus was also devised in conjunction with well respected BJJ practitioners Anthony Perosh and Elvis Sinosic from SPMA Australia.

The Children's syllabus has the same focus to ensure that all the students work towards a sound knowledge of base skills taking into account the age and ability of each of the students. It also covers other aspects such as Break falls, special related exercises, some Judo and Boxing techniques.

Belt System Adults:
The first belt is White , followed by Blue , Purple, Brown , Black

There are four stripe levels in each belt, except at the ,Purple belt which has three and the Brown belt level which has two levels, in Kamphuis - Fabricio  followed by the coveted Black belt.

Black belt levels are separated by degree: The first level is Black belt followed by Black belt 1st degree up to 10th degree ( this is only for the founders of the sport)

Grades Kids:
The first belt is Yellow, followed by  Orange and Green

We have five levels for each belt

Why a syllabus?
Having a syllabus ensures that there is a uniformity and a set standard of teaching at all schools.

Students can be adequately assessed for new belt levels which ensures students that train under Kamphuis - Fabrcio regardless of the location have a consistency in basic skills and knowledge. This is in addition to competition experience and skill at the club level.

The syllabus provides an opportunity for students to have a solid background, an understanding of the basic fundamentals and foundation techniques of the sport as they progress through the ranks. From this base students can build up their skill base while ensuring that they understand key elements and techniques of the sport.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Grades are highly regarded and respected within the community of Martial Arts; a real sense of achievement is obtained as student's progress in grades.

It takes commitment and hard work to obtain your grades in BJJ, there are no short cuts.

Are the grades recognized?
All students grades are listed on our website (www.bjjphilippines.com) and in the near future the website of Equipe Fabrcio in Brazil our Head school.

Our Coach Stephen Kamphuis is one of only a few non Brazilian Instructors to be a  registered Black belt with the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Brazil. He is also  authorized under 5th degree Black belt Fabricio Martins to grant new grades to his students on behalf of Equipe Fabricio Brazil.

All students that are graded at our school have their grades recognized by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation in Brazil and by Fabricio Martins.
